So, what should you expect?


Where is it?

We have a number of places we regularly use for our appointments:

  • CONTACT WARRINGTON – This is in the town centre, next to Caffe Caruso (look for the fountain!) We have our own dedicated room in this building on the right-hand side of the main room. You don’t need to queue up if you have an appointment with us, just come straight to our room and knock on the door.
  • ORFORD YOUTH BASE – We often have meetings in Orford Youth Base on Capesthorne road, too. This gets confused with Orford Community Hub on Festival Avenue, which isn’t a part of the Youth Base at all. Orford Youth Base has a gym next door, so if you can’t see a gym then you’re at the wrong one! We use different spaces here depending on what’s going on, so speak to the receptionist when you arrive.
  • YOUTH CAFE – This is part of New Town House, the big grey building behind the Cockhedge centre. Look for the Youth Cafe signs in the windows to find it. Like the name suggests, the Youth Cafe is a cafe, so there may be people there for other meetings or to get coffee, but when you go in you’ll be greeted by a member of staff – if you tell them you have a careers appointment they’ll show you where to go.
  • HOME VISIT – If you’re having difficulties getting to any of our usual appointment places we may offer to come and visit you at your home. We’ll arrange a suitable date and time with you. Anyone from our team will be wearing a Warrington Borough Council ID badge, usually on a lanyard around their neck.

When Should I Get There?

An appointment is usually booked in for either an hour or half an hour, depending on what you need to do. As advisers may be seeing more than one person in a row it’s best to get to your appointment around 5 minutes before you start.

Most of our appointments are held between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. We might be able to book an appointment a little earlier or later than this for you if you can’t make these times, but we can’t guarantee this.

What Should I Bring With Me?

  • QUALIFICATIONS – It can be useful to bring the results of any qualifications you have to your appointment, but don’t feel like you need to bring the actual certificates in unless your adviser has asked you to, just write down what you have as a list. This is really useful for CV writing or applying for an apprenticeship.
  • SOMETHING TO WRITE ON – If you want to make notes a pen and paper can be useful, but your adviser will have these with them too, so don’t worry if you forget to bring one.
  • SOMEONE ELSE? – A lot of people like to bring a parent or friend to their appointment, and that’s fine! You don’t have to bring anyone with you if you don’t want to, but if you do it should be someone you’re comfortable talking openly with.

What Happens At An Appointment?

An appointment is all about you, so there isn’t one ‘standard’ way to have an appointment. It will be all about what you need.

If it’s your first ever appointment, though, there are a few things that will normally come up. We’ll talk about what you want to do, how you can do it, and what you need to do get there. We’ll often set you things to do outside of the appointment, and tell you what we’ll do for you too.

It’s important to know that although there might be a lot of questions in this first meeting it’s OK to not know the answers. We’re here to help you find out those answers, not tell you off for not knowing these yet.

Some appointments will just be a one-off, but others might be the first of many. Your adviser will let you know if they’re going to book you in for  more appointments or give you a ring to check in on how you’re doing.

“You will be asked questions – but it wont be a test – Questions are a way of helping your adviser to work with you to find
suitable opportunities for you!”

“You should be prepared to discuss your strengths and weaknesses”

“Come prepared to think with the attitude ‘how’ and ‘why’. How will this help me to get where I want to go/or why I am
doing this and what is the benefit.”
